Software for Less

Get Last Years Version
When software manufacturers get ready to release a new version of a product, they sell off the current version at great reductions. Call the manufacturer and ask when the new version of your favorite program will be released. Then watch you local stores for sales. Don't forget to check to see if they have a web site and if they do you'll also discover test versions of new products available for download.

Once a new program comes out, the older versions all but disappear from the store shelves. Manufacturers generally unload all of their old programs by sending them off to mail-order houses for resale.

Contact Mail-Order Houses
Many mail-order houses specialize in selling discontinued programs and overstocks often at dirt-cheap prices.

CAUTION: Sometimes the old version of a program was originally priced much higher than the new version. This means that even at surplus prices the old program can cost less than the newest version. Before buying check and see what the new version is going for.

You can request catalogs from these mail-order houses or check them out online:

Tiger Direct - 800-888-4437
Mac Warehouse - 800-397-8508
Programmer's Paradise - 800-445-7899

Software Auctions
Computer Auctions are listed regularly in the auction pages of your newspaper or try an online auction.

Get It Used
Unless you absolutely need the latest version of a program, why not buy used? You'll often find almost-new disks complete with their manuals for less than half the original selling price. Just be sure to check the disks for viruses and functionality before buying.

Become A Beta Tester
If you have good technical skills, you can save lots of money by becoming a beta tester for your favorite software manufacturer. The company will send you preliminary versions of their products free. In exchange, you systematically try out every function of the product and submit a report detailing any problems you find.

To beta test Microsoft products send an email to BETAREQ@Microsoft.com.

For Lotus products write to Lotus Development Corporation, 555 Cambridge Parkway, Cambridge, Ma 02142 and direct your response to BETA TESTING specify on the envelop the product that interests you or call 617-577-8500.

Freeware and Shareware
Freeware is software you download off the net for free.

Shareware is software you download and try out for a month or so at no cost. If you decide to keep a shareware program you have to pay for it at a considerably lower price than at retail.

There are literally thousands of freeware and shareware programs on the internet from serious to game programs.
